Society of Dyers and Colourists
However I am aware of the unpredictability and colour fast issues to natural dyes, so in this project I decided to use this as a positive and create patterns by fading of colour to create patter. This led me to the anthotype technique (similar to cyanotypes but using natural colouring). I started with several experiments to see how I could combine this with my food waste dyes.
After many experiments I created some successful anthotypes using patterns, leaf compositions and stencils. My colours were chosen based off their success with the technique and I used modifiers that added a second layer to the designs. I love the idea of these pieces surrendering to nature as they continue to be weathered in a sunny area, shadows will add further unpredictable design elements as they evolve over time. I hope that this influences the viewers attitude to the life cycle of materials, seeing the beauty and excitement in each stage of the process.
